During last night's Critical Mass I was asked by a man on the pavement, who had a little girl in tow, the usual "What is going on?". I attempted to explain and was about to launch into the usual spiel when he said, "Explain it to a six year old she wants to know". I was stumped for a moment then blurted out to the child, "They support each other". He seemed very pleased with the answer and shook my hand.
It set me thinking afterwards, usually road users don't support each other, quite the opposite they are rivals for space and speed. So maybe this simple answer sums CM up?
Of course, during the ride there were the usual confrontations and dangers from drivers. One taxi driver who almost ran me down, and who I chased after and caught up with, said the usual "I am trying to earn a living" and I interjected, between swearing at each other, "It only happens once a month".
